Spark secures resource consent for data centre in world-first sustainable development in Auckland

Spark today announced it has received resource consent to build a new, large-scale data centre on Auckland’s North Shore as part of a 43-hectare masterplan development with global surf park creators Aventuur.

In a world-first, the development will use an innovative heat exchange system enabling excess heat produced by the data centre to warm the water of the nearby surfing lagoon, while an onsite seven-hectare solar farm will supply renewable energy back into the data centre.

Michael Stribling, Spark General Manager of Infrastructure, says, “Accelerating growth in our data centre business is a core focus of Spark’s strategy, and with data usage increasing exponentially, particularly with the advent of generative AI, demand for capacity is growing rapidly. Spark is well positioned to capture its share of this growth, with our existing data centre network, complementary digital infrastructure such as our networks and subsea cable assets, our relationships with cloud hyperscalers, and our ability to provide products and services over the top.

Huia 1 watermain ninety per cent complete

Watercare’s new Huia 1 watermain, stretching from Auckland’s western reservoirs in Titirangi to Newmarket, is on track to be in service by April next year - with 90% of the pipeline now in the ground.

Once complete, the $143 million watermain will supply drinking water to about 20 per cent of Auckland’s population.

The new pipeline will replace the existing Huia 1 pipeline which – at 73 years old – is nearing the end of its design life.

Watercare has been working with construction partner March Cato to steadily build the 15km replacement pipeline since June 2019.

Build To Rent Bill passes first reading

The Overseas Investment (Build To Rent and Similar Rental Developments) Amendment Bill has passed its first reading this evening, Housing and Associate Finance Minister Chris Bishop says.

“We need to take every option available to increase the supply of housing in New Zealand, and Build to Rent is one of those options, so I’m very pleased to see the Bill pass its first reading this evening.

“The Bill amends the Overseas Investment Act to create a new streamlined consent pathway, allowing investors to purchase land with the intention of building a new Build to Rent development, or purchasing an existing one.

“Encouraging investment in Build to Rent developments is one part of our programme of work to increase the supply of housing in New Zealand, making it easier for Kiwis to get into a warm and dry home.
