North-West Rapid Transit project fast-tracked

The North-West Rapid Transit project, a major new rapid bus transit route alongside State Highway 16 in Auckland, has been granted fast-track approval, Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop says.

This is the 33rd project approved through the Fast-track process.

The project includes a busway alongside State Highway 16 between Brigham Creek and Auckland City Centre, seven rapid transit stations and one Park and Ride facility at Brigham Creek Rarawaru. It will also include connections to the local bus and road network.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) lodged its application in December 2025, with approval taking less than five months from the appointment of the independent expert panel.

“This project will provide faster, more frequent and reliable public transport for Aucklanders living in the north-west, one of the city’s fastest-growing areas,” Mr Bishop says.

Housing Delivery System reaches 2000th home milestone

Kāinga Ora has delivered more than 2,000 new state houses through its Housing Delivery System (HDS), a milestone that has provided more tenants with warm, modern homes.

The HDS is a streamlined approach to planning and building houses that enables Kāinga Ora to deliver quality homes for whānau faster and cost-effectively.

Piloted in Christchurch in 2022, the first HDS home was completed in Hoon Hay, Christchurch in February 2023. HDS expanded to Auckland and is now being used nationwide as Kāinga Ora continues its housing renewals programme. It is one of the ways the agency delivers new state homes.

Housing Delivery Director Jannie Greeff says years of continuous improvement have enabled the HDS team to scale up and deliver quality new homes quickly and efficiently.

Next steps on Waitematā Harbour crossing

The Coalition Government has made decisions on next steps for the Waitematā Harbour Crossing project, Transport Minister Chris Bishop and Auckland Minister Simon Watts have announced. 

“The existing Auckland Harbour Bridge was completed in 1959 and forms part of the busiest corridor of the State Highway network in New Zealand, carrying 170,000 vehicles daily. It underpins almost $1 billion in annual economic activity, with this activity projected to increase to $3.9 billion by 2051,” Mr Bishop says.

“But the corridor is currently limited by the performance of the bridge. Weight restrictions already constrain freight and buses, and the lack of dedicated public transport (PT) lanes prevents us making the best use of the Northern Busway, which today carries 40% of all people crossing the bridge. 

“These limitations are only going to become more acute. Major renewals are needed in the coming decades, with extended lane closures. Without an additional crossing in place, the total economic cost of that disruption is estimated at around $4.8 billion.
