Thousands of new homes for New Zealanders

The first six months of this financial year has seen construction completed of nearly 1,500 new public homes for individuals and whānau throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. A further 3,300 more are being constructed for completion by the end of June.

Kāinga Ora builds or purchases a variety of new homes to support modern living, including apartments. In the last six months Kāinga Ora has partnered with private developers to deliver 62 new apartments in Otago, Bay of Plenty, and South Auckland. This is in addition to the 252 new apartment units Kāinga Ora has built with its construction partners in Auckland and Wellington on land it already owns.

Patrick Dougherty, General Manager for Construction and Innovation, says houses represent the largest number of new homes completed in the last six months.

Taupō hotel developer selling site and resource consent

Plans for a hotel in downtown Taupō are up in the air as the developer looks to off-load the land.

The 1102 square metre site on Tūwharetoa St, in the heart of the town’s hospitality district, has consent for what would be Taupō's tallest commercial building.

It was a long process for the developer Cypress Capital, with the original proposal for an eight-storey hotel turned down at a resource consent hearing because of the height and rules limiting buildings to three storeys.

It was eventually given the go-ahead in the Environment Court in 2020, with Cypress agreeing to reduce the height of the hotel from eight storeys to six.

Construction of new commercial buildings is in decline with new retail premises at a particularly low ebb

There are emerging signs of a downturn in commercial building construction although it is nowhere near as weak as residential construction, according to interest.co.nz's Commercial Building Consent Analysis for the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023.
There are also considerable differences in the amount of work being consented in different sectors, with construction of new retail and office buildings looking weak, while construction of new warehouse buildings and factories remains more resilient.
The number of consents for new office buildings were particularly low in Q4 last year, with just 46 consents issued nationally for new office buildings
